Palmetto Animal Hospital is happy to offer general wellness care for exotic pets. Our experienced veterinarian, Dr. Chandler Bruening, will see gerbils, hamsters, snakes, rats, and other small mammals. Available exotic pet services include wellness visits, sick exams, viral and diagnostic testing, and more.
Gerbils, hamsters, snakes, rats and other small mammals require different wellness care than dogs and cats. Regular veterinarian visits are equally as important for these types of pets, and Dr. Bruening suggests all exotic pet parents should consider scheduling a routine annual or semi-annual wellness exam for preventative measures.
Oftentimes, exotic pets hide common signs of illness, or symptoms of disease that are unrecognizable to their owners. Wellness visits are a helpful preventative for exotic pets, and during an appointment, Dr. Bruening gives pet parents the opportunity to ask questions about their nutritional requirements, behavioral concerns, specific environment requirements, parasite prevention, and more.
Before your pet's wellness visit, we ask you to bring a fresh stool sample and other medical information you may have relating to your exotic pet. It's also helpful to come prepared to discuss your pet’s environment and nutritional information.
Exotic pets can get sick too, and it's important to bring them in for a sick exam if they are experiencing species-specific signs of illness. Dr. Bruening is qualified and trained to identify signs of illness early that may be a health concern for your exotic pet.
In order to pinpoint the root of the concern, we will assess their skin condition, vitals, pulmonary health, dental health, bone and joint health, and in some cases, diagnostic imaging may be recommended to further test and make the most accurate diagnosis.
If you believe your pet may be experiencing signs of illness, or sudden change in behavior or appearance, please do not hesitate to call us to request an appointment.
